Very early in his life he was elected as the Secretary for the state of Karnataka and later became its National Secretary in 1985. He graduated from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthri Parishad to join its political counterpart Bharatiya Janata Party
. He was nominated as the State President of BJP Yuva Morcha in Karnataka. Ananth Kumar increased his activity in the national politics and he was made the National Secretary in 1996. He was one of the important persons to raise and fight for the RamJanmabhoomi cause in Karnataka. He rose to prominence when the electoral college of the Bangalore South Constituency sent him to the Lok Sabha. In 1998 he was re elected and was inducted in the cabinet headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee
as the minister for Civil Aviation. He also handled ministries like Tourism, Sports, Youth Affairs & Culture, Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation.
