While attending Cowra High School, Farrar played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1979.
Farrar played the majority of his career at Canterbury enjoying 11 seasons at the Bulldogs. In that time he played in 186 first grade matches and 236 overall in grade from 1980 to 1990. During the 1992–93 Rugby Football League season Farrar played at centre for defending RFL champions Wigan in the 1992 World Club Challenge
against the visiting Brisbane Broncos
.
Farrar returned to Canterbury in 2008 when he was elected to the Board of Directors at the Bulldogs Annual General Meeting on Sunday 17 February.
