in 1972; he retired in 1974.
In retirement he became Chairman of the Anglian Water Authority
. He was also made an Emeritus Professor at the University of Essex
. Between 1976 and 1977 he was Chairman of the Royal Navy Club of 1765 & 1785 (United 1889).
He was also Lord Lieutenant of Essex
from 1978 to 1992. He died in 1994.
