André Luis Galvão (ɐ̃ˈdɾɛ ɡaɫˈvɐ̃w̃) is a Brazil
ian grappler and professional mixed martial artist
. He has won the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship
and IBJJF Pan American Championships multiple times and has also taken third place in the 2007 ADCC
World Championship at both -77 kg and openweight. He made his mixed martial arts debut in 2008, and in 2009 he entered Dream
's 2009 welterweight tournament. Since completing the tournament, he has fought in Strikeforce
. Galvão was a competitor in the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship
in Barcelona, Spain where he placed second in the -88kg class. More recently, Galvao had a standout performance at the 2011 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship
where he captured gold in both the -88kg and absolute weight classes defeating Rousimar Palhares
and Pablo Popovitch
, in each respective finals.
Andre Galvao is a black belt student under BJJ legend Fernando "Tererê" Augusto
and now heads the Atos Jiu-Jitsu team in the United States. He is the author of the martial arts book, Drill to Win: One Year to Better Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Victory Belt Publishing, 2010). It focuses on learning the transitional skills of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission wrestling, and MMA through proper diet, calisthenics, and technical drills. Beside competition he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at his home jiu-jitsu academy, Atos San Diego.
