History

Dutta Chaudhuries are the first who came here. The total region of Andul including Argori upto Amta belonged to the Zamindar family of Dutta Chaudhuri. This family have produced many eminent personal one of them is Gobinda Chandra Dutta Chaudhuri, by whose name Gobindapur(One of the Three villages which constituted the modern Kolkata city) is named. Their more than 500 years old ancestral house is totally ruined now, no one cannot even see a trace of it. According to local folks there is a supernatural story regarding the name and fame of this family, they say that the Dutta Chaudhuries came to power only because of the blessings of a mythical stone. They also earned British trust tough they themselves didn't play the role of "middle man". Slowly due to internal family matters this family broke into Hatkhola Dutta Proibar,Andul Dutta Chaudhury Paribar,Belur Dutta paribar and Bangladesh Dutta Paribar.Mainly it's two branch-Hatkhola and Andul Dutta Chaudhury earned a huge amount of respect and trust of the British.At first Andul Dutta Chaudhury was only Andul Dutta.But after gaining equal number of respect from Shah Jahan

,ultimately who honored Andul Dutta paribar and gifted the tittle CHAUDHURY. Together it pronounce as DUTTA CHAUDHURY.

After Dutta Chaudhuries the family which came to Power is Kundu Chaudhuri. There magnificent Bari or Bati can still be seen today. According to local folks the Kundu Chaudhuri were at first merchants and as they earned the faith and trust of the British Empire, so they were given the charge of the regions of Daner Sk Lane and few parts of howrah(main) city along with mouri. Thus they came in power.

After the Kundu Chaudhury there came the Rai( or Raja). They were said to be the owner of 7 ships of Jewels. They took the charge of few parts of Andul region and far southern regions of Howrah.They were designated as Zamindars by Lord Clive himself. Their palace or Rajar bari can still be seen in Rajar maidan. This Rajar bari is the historical sign of Andul.

, Andul had a population of 5677. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Andul has an average literacy rate of 87%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 53% of the males and 47% of females literate. 6% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Andul houses several industrial activity especially in the northern areas near Alampur. Leading industries are steel, engineering and instrumentation, motor vehicle, jewellery, dairy etc. Previously there was a large operation of Frigerio Conserva Allana Ltd at the southern part near Mourigram railway station. There are a number of markets including that of Andul Bazar. New shopping mall, supermarkets have been developed in last few years. Andul has its renowned traditional industry of wooden furniture.

Historical Places

Previously the whole region of Chaudhury Para ,Purbapara upto Amta belonged to the Dutta Chaudhuri s.The Andul Palace is the most important to be mentioned. Three Royal families resides in the beautiful place of Andul a.)Dutta Chaudhury Poribar,b.)Kundu Chaudhury Poribar and c.)the Rajas(Rai).Famous Saraswati river flows through
Andul.It was named "Ananda Dhuli" when Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitany Dev stayed one night over here, in the ancestral house of the Dutta Chaudhuri's of Andul. And after several conversion it finally named "ANDUL".

Education

Andul has a number of primary, secondary and higher secondary schools. Most renowned is Notun Andul Uccha Shreni Vidyalaya which was established in the year 1941 and was a centre of education,culture and independence struggle in the surrounding areas. Mahiary K C Institution And New Andul H C School are also famous. There is a college named Prabhu Jagatbandhu College which is affiliated to University of Calcutta.Andul has also taken part an important role in girls' education.The most famous girls' school at Andul is Gramya Hitakari Balika Vidyalaya.
