She studied Mathematics at Oxford and earned a PhD in Biomathematics from Imperial College, London. In 1990 she became a Royal Society Research Fellow at Oxford and then, in 1994, was on secondment at the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

In 2005 she also became Director of the Institute for Emerging Infections of Humans in the James Martin 21st Century School and in 2008 a Senior Research Fellow in Theoretical Life Sciences at All Souls College, Oxford. In 2009, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
