After attending secretarial school, Anne went to work for General Motors Canada where she met and married Charles Annibal Root. Although Anne began painting in the 1960s and trained under oil painter Margaret McLaughlin, her “career” was sidetracked when she and Charles started a family. Together they had three children: Kelly Anne (born February 13, 1962); Craig Edward (born September 9, 1966); and Mary Katherine (born June 7, 1970). Charles’ career had the Roots moving frequently—from Oshawa, Ontario to Red Wing, MN in 1965; returning to Oshawa in 1967; and moving again to Buffalo, NY in 1968. They divorced in 1978.
Anne met and later married Al Abgott (1988), who was Chairman and Co-Founder of Partner’s Press in Buffalo. Together they owned a home in Williamsville, NY, not far from Park Country Club. But it was at Buffalo Golf & Country Club where Anne was an avid golfer and paddle tennis player. Her passion for the arts was not lost and she started a career in photography.
Anne and Al purchased a winter home in Cortez, Florida. It was there that Anne developed a love for watercolor painting while attending classes at the Long Boat Key Art Center, in nearby Long Boat Key, Florida. Her years of photography provided subject matter for her early paintings.
After discovering a melanoma, Al Abgott died suddenly in 1998. And not long after Al died, Anne fell in love with Bob Freeman, a widower and retired businessman from Kalamozoo, Michigan. Bob encouraged and helped Anne to fulfill her dream of becoming and being an accomplished artist. Anne and Bob maintain studios in Cortez, Florida and in Linville, North Carolina.
