Another Day (Roy Harper song)
Encyclopedia
"Another Day" is a song by Roy Harper
from his album Flat Baroque and Berserk
.
The track's bittersweet lyrics are written from the point of view of a man looking back with regret upon a missed chance. A chance that might have led him to a love he searches for. Eternally. He views his former girlfriend, whom he has met again, with wonder, and yet with some reticence. Their love for each other has perhaps never been consummated. They are now free to love, but it's a big step for him. There are unspoken knowledges perhaps. He is left with a feeling of regret and a sense of powerlessness. She wishes that they could both step back in time. She probably wants him to make a move, but he can't. Perhaps too much water has flowed under the bridge. He wants her, but he hesitates. Perhaps he will always regret that. Perhaps he allowed the love of his life to slip through his fingers into the cold night air. Forever. "And at the door we can't say more than just another day, and without a sound I turn around and walk away."
The song has been covered several times by numerous artists including Peter Gabriel
and Kate Bush
, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra
, and by Elizabeth Fraser
of Cocteau Twins
