Anthony W. Batts is the former chief of police
for Oakland, California

and previously was the chief of police for Long Beach, California
. He announced his resignation on October 11, 2011, without specifying an effective date, and Mayor Jean Quan
appointed Howard Jordan as a replacement Chief as of October 13, 2011. Batts worked in the Long Beach Police Department
for 27 years, rising to Chief of Police in 2002. Under Batts homicides decreased 45% and overall crime decreased 13% in Long Beach. Batts has said that he was motivated to seek the Oakland Chief of Police job by the aftermath of the killing of four Oakland police officers
in March, 2009.
In June, 2010, amid budget cuts and layoffs, Batts announced there would be 44 crimes to which 9-1-1
dispatchers would no send Oakland's police, mainly crimes where no immediate danger
and no criminals appeared to be present at the scene.
In January 2011, it was learned Batts was a top candidate for San Jose, California
Chief of Police. The following month, Batts announced he would remain with the Oakland Police Department
, a few days after mayor Jean Quan
announced a plan which included rehiring ten of the 80 officers who were laid off the previous summer.
On October 11, 2011, Chief Batts announced that he is resigning from the Oakland Police Department in November. In a letter to Oakland city workers, he stated "It is with great regret that I tender this official notice of my intent to resign as chief of police for the city of Oakland."
