In the 1960's he opposed desegregation busing in the United States. In July 1967 advocated armed white self-defense and he formed the North Ward First Aid Squad as a vigilante group.
In 1973 he won a seat in the New Jersey State Senate as an independent candidate. He was defeated in 1977, but was elected again in 1979 as a member of the Republican party
. In 1974, when he ran for Mayor of Newark, New Jersey and lost to Kenneth Allen Gibson. Imperiale received 43.7 percent of the votes.
He died on December 27, 1999 at Saint Barnabas Medical Center
