Produced by MediaPost Communications, an American independent media, marketing and advertising publishing and events company, awards were presented in twenty six categories in a ceremony hosted by the advertising industry veteran and AdWeek critic Barbara Lippert. According to the publisher, it was "the US's first major app awards ceremony created to celebrate excellence and innovation in app design in all imaginable categories." The company is planning to host the next Appy Awards gala event in March of 2012 in San Francisco, making it an annual event.
