, Edward A. McCarthy, the school's mascot is the Maverick. The founding principal of the school was Dr. Richard Perhla. Students wear a uniform consisting of a solid white or light blue shirt, AMHS khaki slacks, a black leather belt, black leather shoes, and a student ID with AMHS lanyard. As of the 2010-2011 school year, there are 1,455 students enrolled in grades nine through twelve. Since 2005 AMHS has been named one of the Top 50 Catholic Schools in the nation by the Catholic High School Honor Roll.

Campus

Archbishop McCarthy High School is a Catholic college preparatory institution in the South Florida area. The campus consists of two main two-story buildings, a football field with a surrounding track , one baseball diamond, one softball diamond, a brand new Student Center with its own "Maverick Grill" including a stage. The school has an air conditioned gymnasium, indoor weight room, three "learning modules" which are referred to as the Fine Arts Village, an outdoor courtyard, a chapel, and a car parking area.

The Maverick Zoo

The Archbishop McCarthy Maverick Zoo was founded, created and still run by Joe Curtis and Tyler Stampler. It is the student and fan section at the Gym, also known as the Morrell Center. The "Zoo," as known by students, faculty, and alumni, is rated as the toughest high school gym to play at in South Florida by the FHSAA. The Maverick Zoo is online at http://themaverickzoo.com.

Retreats

As part of the spiritual of students at Archbishop McCarthy, a retreat open to all students is offered. These retreats help students develop a relationship with Christ beyond that which the classroom studies offer. These retreats are led by the Theology department and are as follows: Pietá for Freshman, Antioch for sophomores, Transfiguration for Juniors, and Diakonia for Seniors. Besides the Freshman retreat which is held on campus on select Saturdays, the retreats usually last about three days off campus and occur generally twice a year.
