and his wife Maria Louisa of Spain. After the accession of his father to the Imperial throne in 1790, Alexander Leopold was appointed Palatine (Regent) of Hungary
. After he was accidentally burned to death in 1795 (while preparing a firework display at Laxenburg Palace in honour of his sister-in-law Empress Maria Theresa), his brother Joseph took his place as Hungarian Palatine.
