. Rock Sand could not stay with his seniors and Ard Patrick wore down Sceptre near the line to win by a neck. This was the second time in three attempts that he had beaten the outstanding filly. Ard Patrick had finished third to Sceptre in the 2,000 Guineas, but reversed that in the 1902 Derby, with the filly - who started favourite - only fourth. After the Derby, he was awarded the Prince of Wales's Stakes
on an objection. Ard Patrick missed the St. Leger
because of leg trouble and broke down so badly after the Eclipse Stakes
that he could not race again.
Before the Eclipse stakes, Ard Patrick was sold as a four year old stallion
to the German government
for £21,000.
