's sole area code. 603 was created as one of the original area codes in October, 1947.

As of April, 2011, 603 was nearing exhaustion, and a second area code for New Hampshire was expected to be activated by 2013. A New Hampshire-wide overlay was recommended. However, due to the reclamation of a large number of stranded phone numbers, the exhaust date has moved back significantly, possibly beyond 2020.

 is not yet mandatory in New Hampshire, callers using the 603 area code do not need to dial 603 plus the other seven digits for in-state numbers. Many businesses in southern New Hampshire, however, use 10-digit phone numbers in their advertising.
