Arif Zaman, Ph.D.
, is a Pakistani mathematician
and an academic scientist. He is the Professor of Statistics
and Mathematics
and as well as Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at the School of Science and Engineering of the Lahore University of Management Sciences. He previously served as a member of the Statistics Department at Purdue University
and later at Florida State University
for 12 years before he joined Lahore University of Management Sciences
's Mathematics Department in 1994.
Zaman attended the Harvey Mudd College
in 1972 where he did his B.S.
in Mathematics in 1976. In 1977, Zaman obtained M.A.
in Applied Mathematics
, and PhD
in Statistics
from Stanford University
in 1981. His doctoral thesis contained a comprehensive study on de Finetti's theorem
and its possible turn out in Markov chain
. His dissertation was supervised by world acclaim statistician Persi Diaconis.
His current research has been in the field of pseudo-random number generation that is now widely used because of its suitability for modern computer needs. He has also published papers on generalisations of Markov chains, and on using computers to solve various theoretical problems in mathematics
and statistics
. His publications have been in various journals including: The Annals of Probability, Mathematics of Computation, Journal of Applied Probability, and Journal of Statistical Computation.
He was also allegedly one of the two people involved in creating one of the first rabbit worms that replicated themselves over the local network. This was in the early 1970s while a student in Stanford university.
He is a member of Tablighi Jamaat
