located in the U.S. state of Arizona and contains much of the eastern and northeastern suburbs of Phoenix
. The district also includes the cities of Scottsdale
and Tempe
and contains a small southeastern portion of the city of Phoenix itself.
A swing district, it is currently represented by Republican
David Schweikert
, who defeated Democratic incumbent and former Mayor of Tempe Harry Mitchell in 2010.
and Scottsdale
and portions of Chandler
, Mesa
and the Ahwatukee
section of Phoenix
. Although Republicans outnumber Democrats by about 40,000 voters, the 5th District is considered far less conservative than other suburban Phoenix districts. George W. Bush
received 54% of the vote in this district in 2004
