He started wrestling at the age of eight and wrestled for the USSR in international tournaments until the breakup of that country in 1991. After which Nazarian wrestled for Armenia
, before emigrating to Bulgaria in 1995. He received Bulgarian citizenship in May 1997.
When he was in his prime, Nazarian was one of the most feared Greco wrestlers in the world. He is the most decorated of all the active Greco Roman style wrestlers and in his career has amounted 2 Olympic gold medals, 1 Olympic bronze, as well as 6 world medals to his name.
Nazarian competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
