Aravam means Jasmine in Tamil language. Since this city is known for jasmine cultivation, it was called "Aravakottai" which means 'Fort of Jasmines'. Weaving industry in Aruppukottai serves mainly the Tamil Nadu Government's Free Dhotie, Saree Campaign. Agriculture is also a main concern in town areas Puliam Patty, Vadugar Kottai and surrounding village areas.

Education

Virudhunagar district continued to be on the top in the State in Plus Two and SSLC examination results for more than two decades now. In the SSLC exam conducted in 2010, Aruppukottai educational district tops all the 68 educational districts in the State with a record success rate of 97.51 percentage. Forty schools, including record 24 Government schools, produced centum results in the Aruppukottai educational district alone. Main reason for this, are sustained monitoring of individual school, group of students there contributed to the success and there was lot of competition among the students in scoring high marks. Madurai, the second biggest city in Tamil Nadu by population, is only 45 km away. NH 45-B, an important freight-route, connecting Madurai and Thoothukkudi runs through Aruppukottai.

There are many private bus operators who ply the routes to nearby villages. Madurai is one of the most profitable competitive destinations. Every surrounding village is connected through bus links frequently. Some of the villages have only buses for morning and evening only. Normally you can get continuous buses to Madurai and other places every half an hour you can get buses for travelling.

Railways

Aruppukottai has one non-working railway station because it is having meter gauge only. This Railway station is now being converted to Broad Gauge railway line to Connect Manamadurai and Virudhunagar. Further more now Railway department started a Survey for Madurai to Thoothukudi Broad Gauge New railway line through Kariapatti -Aruppukottai -Ettaiyapuram - Thoothukudi.

Town Roads

Although it's one of the main routes for connecting the Southern Tamil Nadu with Madurai city, the road facilities within the town are poor. The roads are very narrow and riddled.

Water Shortage

There was a chronic shortage of drinking water until the year 2005. After plan to bring water from Tamirabarani river has been successfully implemented, this shortage has eased to a great extent.

Human capital flight

Although the towns' schools produce a lot of students who graduate in top Professional Schools every year, the town still lacks any development in industrial sector. Even now, one can see a student from Aruppukottai in all top professional colleges. All of them migrate to cities. This can be attributed to the lack of natural resources and water scarcity, or to the urbanization in general.
