Encyclopedia
The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) is a trade organization that represents Asian American
hotel
owners in the hospitality industry. Created in 1989, AAHOA is now one of the industry's fastest-growing organizations. It has more than 10,000 members owning more than 22,000 hotels with a total of $60 billion in property value.
AAHOA officers and AAHOA's 33 members of the Board of Directors are in charge of managing the association. They work to promote and protect the interests of AAHOA members by inspiring excellence through programs and initiatives in advocacy, industry leadership, professional development, member benefits, and community involvement.
To fight resistance from insurance and banking companies which discriminated with Indians, a group was formed in Tennessee in 1985, the Midsouth Indemnity Association, which then grew nationwide and changed its name in the Indo American Hospitality Association. Another group of Indian hoteliers was created in Atlanta in 1989, whose goals were to address discrimination issues and increase awareness of Asian Americans working in the hospitality industry. They chose the name of Asian American Hotel Owners Association.
In 1994, the Indo American Hospitality Association and the Asian American Hotel Owners Association decided to merge in order to work more efficiently to defend Asian hotel owners’ interests throughout the United States. AAHOA is nowadays the largest membership-based Indian business organization in the United States.
