Association of Art Museum Directors
Encyclopedia
The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) is an organisation of art museums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Established in 1916 by the directors of twelve American museums, the Association formally incorporated in 1969. At that time the Association also hired an employee, and increased the meetings from once to twice a year. AAMD's charter members were motivated by a desire to create an intimate forum to share news and ideas. The AAMD has maintained a limited membership bringing the directors into closer contact with their peers at a wide variety of leading art institutions.
AAMD's policies and guidelines are highly influential, developed as they are by the directors of North America's leading art museums. Various AAMD publications prescribe approved professional practices for art museums generally, ranging from proper procedures for the sale of artworks by institutions to recommended limits on what artworks should be acquired by museums.
