Athanasios Kanakaris was a Greek
politician. He was born in Patras
in 1760. He fought in the Greek War of Independence
against the Ottoman Empire. He was also a member of the Filiki Eteria
.
He came from a wealthy family that had many notable figures. His father, Benizelo Roufus, was a wealthy Sicilian who held an administrative post in Calabria
. His son was also called Benizelos Rouphos
who also served as Prime Minister of Greece later on. Other members of the family served as mayors, members of parliament and ministers. He married Paraskevi Kostaki and apart from the aforementioned son they had a daughter called Aggeliki.
He died in the small town of Ermioni
on January 14, 1824.
