Prior to playing professionally, Gartrell attended Sacred Heart Cathedral High School and later the University of San Francisco
. He was drafted by the White Sox in the 31st round of the 2006 amateur draft, being signed by scout Adam Virchis.
Professional career

He began his professional career in 2006, splitting the year between the Bristol White Sox
