, is a sister train to the main Mumbai Rajdhani. It is named after the August Kranti Maidan formerly known as the Gowalia Tank Maidan from where the Quit India Movement
was launched in August 1942.

and as train number 12954 in the reverse direction. It covers a distance of 1377 kilometres in each direction however it takes 17 hours 10 mins when operating as train number 12953 at an average speed of 80.21 km/h (excluding halts) while its return journey as train number 12954 takes 17 hrs 20 mins at an average speed of 79.44 km/h (excluding halts). The other trains on the route, that run faster than 12953/12954 August Kranti Rajdhani Express are the 12951/12952 Mumbai Rajdhani Express and the 12909/12910 Garib Rath Express.
It leaves Mumbai Central as train number 12953 on a daily basis at 1740 hrs and at the end of 13 halts arrives at Hazrat Nizamuddin the next day at 1050 hrs. Train number 12954 leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin on a daily basis at 1655 hrs arriving at Mumbai Central the next day at 1015 hrs. Over the years several minor halts at Borivali, Vapi, Valsad, Bharuch, Nagda have been added.12953/12954 August Kranti Rajdhani Express has more stops than 12909/12910 Garib Rath Express & 12907/12908 Maharashtra Sampark Kranti combined.
It departs Mumbai Central with a Valsad WCAM 2P locomotive in order to use Mumbai's DC traction wires & switches power-on-the-fly in a dead zone beyond Virar from where onwards it is a pure AC line. It gets a locomotive change at Vadodara where it swaps the WCAM 2P for a GZB WAP 7 or WAP5. This process of locomotive change takes 18 mins.
Recently, Western Railway has begun converting the Mumbai region's 1500v DC traction to 25000v AC traction. This will result in the elimination of the need to change engine's at Vadodara & WAP engines will start entering the Mumbai region.

The August Kranti generally has a 1 AC 1st Class, 4 AC 2 tier 2 pantry cars, 2 luggage cum generator coach & up to 10 AC 3 tier coaches taking the total up to 19 coaches the maximum that can be accommodated at Mumbai Central station.Locomotion
The train is hauled using electric engines all the way from Mumbai to Nizamuddin with a loco change over at Vadodara. A WCAM 2P engine haules the train between Mumbai Central and Vadodara where it switches over to a WAP 7 engine from the GZB shed. It would earlier get a WAP 5 engine.Soon the process of Loco change will stop as the entire root will be electrified by 25K AC voltage till Churchgate.
