It was originally built by a consortium of eight universities together with other organisations such as the Australia Council

, PASIG (Performing Arts Special Interest Group) and the Playbox Theatre, and was funded by the Australian Research Council

. It was launched in pilot mode in October 2002. To date AusStage has received funding from the Australian Research Council, the National eResearch Architecture Taskforce, the Australian National Data Service and the Australian Access Federation.
