He was born in New Hampshire
and died in Santa Clara, California
. He grew up on the small island of Nauru, one of three sons of parents who served as medical personnel for the British phosphate mining operations on the island. He graduated from Stanford University and graduated from UC Berkeley's law school. He was on the Stanford University swimming team and water polo team.
In the 1928 Olympics he won a gold medal in the 4x200 m freestyle relay event. He was also fifth in the 400 m freestyle event and did not start in the semifinal of 1500 m freestyle event and did not advance.
Four years later he was a member of American water polo team, which won a bronze medal.
