However in 2006 Avalon was nothing but a spot in the road on Highway 7 about 12 miles north of Greenwood

with a small green highway sign depicting Avalon, and a commemorative Highway marker placed by Carroll County recognizing Hurt as a great bluesman. Avalon today just has the remains of a store that used to be there, and a few houses plus the 'Mississippi John Hurt Museum' which is contained in the shack where he lived.
