Avanzada Regia

Avanzada Regia was a musical movement in the mid 1990's from Monterrey

. The movement began professionally in 1995 but its pioneers began playing in bars in the city in 1994, receiving attention and popularity in their hometown.

Origins

In 1995, the group Zurdok Movimiento

won the Battle of the Bands at the Rockotitlan music festival, becoming the first band not from Mexico City to win it, thus creating such expectations towards the city that the record companies began to move there to search for groups. La Ultima de Lucas, made up of young people all under twenty years but who had talented musicians in their lineup, was the first band from Monterrey to sign a record contract.

However, excessive paperwork and the inexperience of the record companies in dealing with matters not located in Mexico City, together with the personal interests of musicians, made it so that on the day when the release of this group's first disc was announced, their breakup was also made official.

Again, the picture became somewhat gloomy, but something had awakened in Monterrey musicians. Now they knew it was possible to capture the attention of record companies, even from Monterrey. The different groups did not relent and continued playing on various stages across Northern Mexico.

It was not until 1996 that another group, this time a hip-hop group, finally signed a contract with a transnational company. The trio Control Machete

was the first from Monterrey to achieve the dream of having a record on the market, supported by the entire infrastructure of a record company. And it was not just a fluke, it sold nearly half a million copies its first title: Mucho Barato. Contrary to what one might expect from a hip hop group, Control Machete's rhymes did not talk about gang

Consolidation

The fact that Monterrey had become a hotbed of rock bands soon became more evident. Several names appeared among critics and journalists to call this movement. Ironically, almost all came from Mexico City. "Avanzada regia" and "Movida regia", were perhaps the more enduring names. There were those who even dared to call Monterrey "the Seattle of Mexico" for its similarity to what happened almost a decade earlier had happened in that place.

Reasons for success

The reasons why so many talented and prolific groups emerged in Monterrey are many: first, the proximity to the border and thus the musical influence of American and even British bands. This coupled with the ability to buy often cheaper instruments in the neighboring state of Texas
Texas
Texas is the second largest U.S. state by both area and population, and the largest state by area in the contiguous United States. The name, based on the Caddo word "Tejas" meaning "friends" or "allies", was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in...

. Among several others, the surprising fact that, having been ignored for so many years by record executives, young artists began to make music without any limitation (marketing or commercial

), which allowed them to develop a freer and more original style, also the support of local entrepreneurs as well as the support of radio stations like D99 and Planet 104.5 that gave them airplay even if they weren't signed to a record company, the television host Juan Ramon Palacios and journalists like Xardiel Padilla.

Style

To catalog all Monterrey rock within a single facet, would be not only unlikely, but naive. Among the different styles there are clear influences from brit-pop (Jumbo

They also opened the door for a whole new generation of bands that would come later, making new roads over the one that was already traced.

Despite the absence of any constant in the various musical styles that identified the Monterrey bands, there is a factor that was always present: the camaraderie and solidarity
