. The population was 462 at the 2000 census. Every year it host the Annual Tomato Festival around the beginning of July to honor its history as one of the largest tomato producing cities in eastern Texas.

There were 210 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were married couples
living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.75.
In the town the population was spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
