. It was originally named Kirkton High School until merging with Rockwell High School in August 1997. The School is set in over 20 acres (8.1 ha) of its own grounds with exceptional views to the North.

Naming

Dundee City Council Education committee asked the joint School Board to choose a new name for the school. Two names were chosen Baldragon and Craigowl. Craigowl being a nearby hill

 (which was subsequently chosen as one of the House names) and Baldragon being the name for the area in The Legend of the Nine Maidens Well. The pupils were asked to vote for their preference and the overwhelming choice was Baldragon Academy.

. All named after prominent hills in the local area. The Houses are represented by a colour and an animal. Green and a bear for Balgay, purple and an owl for Craigowl and blue and a dolphin for Law. These colours are also used on the Junior School Tie along with a white stripe. This white stripe and the space on the House Points board has fuelled rumours that there is a fourth House. Though there is no evidence that backs this up.

 "SoundTownhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/soundtown/" school for session 2007-2008. The school was provided with a fully operational radio studio and has been involved in numerous broadcasts and projects throughout the year long project. Over 400 pupils have taken part in the project so far and it is hoped that all staff and pupils will have played a part in this project by the end of the session. The school has its own radio station BBG1http://baldragon.ea.dundeecity.sch.uk/Departments/BBG/BBG.htm, which broadcasts every year for 2-3 days at a time. The school is also woking with the radio station Bridge fm. This session from soundtown has also spiralled down into a brand new subject being created within the school, Creative Digital Media. The two teachers for this are Martin Gibbons and Andrew McArtney, two of the main helpers at soundtown. They are very sound teachers ;)
