The village of Bampton centres around the Mardale Inn, Bampton village store, garage and caravan site.
Also within the village is the traditional red telephone box used in the 1980s cult classic movie Withnail & I. In February 2009, Sebastian Hindley, the landlord of the Mardale Inn purchased nearby Sleddale Hall
which features in the movie as 'Uncle Monty's Cottage'.
