Aikhenvald (1999) considers Curripaco
and Kadaupuritana (Catapolitani, Katpolítani) to be dialects; Kaufman (1994) considers them to be distinct languages. Ethnologue distinguishes only the first. Various dialects of both Baniwa and Curripaco are called Tapuya. All are spoken by the Baniwa people.
