Barry Albert Kyle is an English
theatre director, currently Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company
, England, and Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Missouri–Kansas City
.
Kyle attended Beal Grammar School
in Ilford where he showed an early interest in theatre. He then studied drama and English at the University of Birmingham
and began his theatre career in 1969 at the Liverpool Playhouse
. In 1973 he became an assistant director at the Royal Shakespeare Company
where he directed in the studio theatre called The Other Place
, as well as in the main house in conjunction with Trevor Nunn
among others. In 1986 he directed the first production at the RSC’s associated Swan Theatre
, The Two Noble Kinsmen by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher. In summer 1997, Kyle directed Hamlet
at the Singapore Repertory Theatre
.
In 1991 Kyle moved to the United States, founding the Swine Palace
theatre company at Louisiana State University
, Baton Rouge. While there he also directed in New York (Henry V, off-Broadway, 1992) and Washington (Romeo and Juliet, The Shakespeare Theater, 1994). He has also directed in major theatres around the world including Berlin, Hamburg, Melbourne, Moscow, Paris, Prague, Tel Aviv and Warsaw.
In 2003 Kyle joined the University of Missouri–Kansas City Department of Theatre as Professor of Theatre Arts http://cas.umkc.edu/theatre/about.html. He now divides his time between Kansas City and London, where he has directed at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
