Old Batlagundu is the mother village of Batlagundu.Mariamman temple at Old Batlagundu is the main goddess in this region,and the festival being held in this temple at every year is famous in this region.
The economy of the town is mostly dependent on agricultural products, and is home to a banana leaf commission, coconut powder exports, spinning mills, and other businesses. With its proximity to the foothills of the Kodaikanal mountain range, there are wholesale businesses that involve vegetables and fruits (carrots, apples, blue cabbage, tomato, and coffee) that grow in the mountains.

This institution was started in early 2002 with an initial enrollment of 15, and now it has nearly 400 students. He boosted the Higher Secondary Passing Percentage in that locality. Career guidance is provided for the students. The institution is now reigstered as a Trust under the Indian Trust Act as "Swami Vivekananda Educational Service Trust".
Batlagundu is the birth place of Freedom Fighter Subramania Siva and novelist Rajam Krishnan.
Kanaku pillai family from Old Batlagundu is one of the famous group in this area,Sethuramasamy pillai and Sankaralingam pillai are the famous personalities from this family.They served as the boss for this village once.They have given many donations in this area
