History
The Bawms of the CHT call their settlements “Bawmram ” which means a Bawm inhabited area or region. To the Mizos of Mizoram and the Chins of Chin Hills, their settlements have also been known as “Bawmram.” Historical facts have deduced that the Bawm settlement in the CHT is very ancient. Many archeological relics, sanctuaries, ruined villages, imprints and reminiscents are found in the north-eastern side of the present Chittagong and CHT. These are important indicators of the earliest Bawm settlement. In 80 A.D. the Bawm settlements were found in Chittagong and the present Chittagong Hill Tracts. According to the historical chronology of the Kukis of Manipur State, Khupling was the king of Tagoung (Chittagong) during 80 A.D.. He ruled over 27 big villages. At that time, ethnic Kuki people were called Pong or Poi (now Pawi or Lai) by other Kuki kingdoms. In addition, in 1134-1205 A.D. the kingdom Chon-mang is well recorded in the Kuki history. King Chon-mang's territory covered the present CHT, Mizoram, Tripura and Cachar Hills. The territories three sub-capitals were Khampat (Burma), Champhai (Mizoram) and Vanlaiphai (Tripura-CHT. Around in 18th century a large portion of the Bawms again came to the CHT under the leadership of Liankung Chief from Chin Hills. It was the last movement to the CHT.
