Background

Becharam Manna belongs to a poor family of share croppers living at Ratanpur. He studied up to class X and holds a diploma from an Industrial Training Institute. He worked in a jute mill for some time.
The self-declared affidavits submitted by candidates for the 2011 state assembly elections reveal that Becharam Manna is involved in twenty-two criminal cases. After winning in the elections, he confirmed that at Singur land had been “forcibly taken from nearly 2,900 villagers”.
