Berycids are found in both temperate and tropical waters around the world, between 10 and 1300 m (32.8 and 4,265.1 ft) in depth, though mainly greater than 100 metres (328.1 ft). They are typically red in colour, and measure up to 60 centimetres (23.6 in) in length. Distinguishing features include spiny scales, and large eyes and mouths.
