speaking community is mainly found in the state of Maharashtra
in India
. They are of similar race to that of Ezhava
s of Kerala
, edigas and billavas of Karanataka. They are basically into toddy shopping, brewing arrack etc. However they were warriors of many kingdoms in central India.
The community claims that it is a "Kshatriya" caste which is one of the oldest caste in Mumbai. Bhandaris had significant contribution in the growth and development of Mumbai. Since AD 400 this caste is mentioned in the literature. In "Chind Mahatmya" had mentioned Sheshvanshiy caste also in "Rajput Tribes" it is described how these caste developed.
