Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris
Encyclopedia
The Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris, commonly abbreviated with the acronym BHVP, is a public library
specializing in the history of the city of Paris
. It has been located, since 1969, in the hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon at 24 rue Pavée, in the Marais (4th arrondissement) in Paris.
After the destruction of the old city library in the Paris Hôtel de Ville
(city hall) by fire in May 1871, it was decided in 1872 to create, pursuant to a bequest by Jules Cousin (1830 - 1899), a library devoted entirely to the history of the capital: the Bibliothèque historique de la Ville de Paris.
The library brings together documents on the history of Paris and the Île-de-France
in a variety of aspects: topographic, historic, social, artistic, literary, etc. It offers for public consultation a collection dating from the 16th century to the present, composed of about a million books and booklets and 21,000 manuscripts, as well as plans, maps, and photographs.
It is one of the specialized libraries integrated into the network of Paris municipal libraries, and also sponsors the City's historical research service.
