The Bielefeld Stadtbahn is a public Stadtbahn
(tram
way or light railway
in the German
city of Bielefeld
. It includes segments built to rapid transit
standards, usually as part of a process of conversion to a metro
railway). It is operated by moBiel, a subsidiary of the Bielefeld municipal authority (Stadtwerke). The old tram network was rebuilt into a Stadtbahn
between 1978 and 1991. Eighty trams transport around 26 million passengers every year on its four lines. The network has a total track length of 31.9 km. Of the 62 stops, eight are underground stations.
Trains run until 1 a.m. every day, service starts at 4:30 a.m. on weekdays, 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays and 8:30 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays. Trains run every 5 - 10 mins but just every 15 mins late night. On weekend nights there are nightbuses running the light rail routes hourly so there is a 24-hour-service.
