in 1990. He was re-elected in 1994, 1998 and 2002, serving in that position from 1991-2007.

with his wife, Marilyn, and has 2 children, Jason and Linnea.

He also serves on the Environment and Natural Resources subcommittees for Forestry, and for Public Lands and Waters, on the Finance subcommittees for the Agriculture and Veterans Budget and Policy Division, for the Judiciary Budget Division, and for the Public Safety Budget Division, and on the Rules and Administration Subcommittee for Ethical Conduct.
In 2008, he was appointed to the Minnesota Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council by the senate's majority leader
