In his first professional season in 2009–10, Sauer was signed by the Avalanche's American Hockey League

. Sauer, however, primarily spent the year in the ECHL with loans to four different teams between playing sparingly in 15 games with the Monsters.
On August 27, 2010, Sauer was signed to a one-year contract in the ECHL with the Gwinnett Gladiators
for the 2010–11 season. After 18 games with the Gladiators on February 11, 2011, Sauer was loaned to the Worcester Sharks
of the AHL. On February 16, Sauer was returned by the Sharks without featuring in a game and was promptly traded by Gwinnett for a second stint with fellow ECHL team, the Las Vegas Wranglers.
