Hussey's coaching career started at Davidson College from 1981 to 1989 where he coached two 20-win seasons (1985–86 and 1986–87) and the Southern Conference in 1986.
He left Davidson for Clemson (1989–92) and then to Virginia Tech from 1992 to 1999.
Hussey was promoted to head coach at Virginia Tech in the 1997-98 season. He returned to Clemson as an assistant from 1999 to 2003. Prior to his death Hussey was a coaching advisor and working at various basketball camps on campus.
