Bobby Hutton

Bobby James Hutton, or "Lil' Bobby," (April 21, 1950 – April 6, 1968) was the treasurer and first recruit to join the Black Panther Party
. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas
in 1950. When he was three years old his family moved to California after they were visited by nightriders intimidating and threatening blacks in the area. He joined soon after the conception of the BPP in 1966 at the age of 16.

The impetus for the police ambush was the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. According to the Black Panthers, police shot him more than a dozen times after he had surrendered and had stripped down to his underwear to prove that he was unarmed. The police said that Hutton and Cleaver were holed up at 1218 28th Street and were armed with two 9mm automatic pistols, two AR-15 and one M-14 military type automatic rifles and a large supply of ammunition, some of it armor piercing.
It is estimated that over 2,000 people attended his funeral which was held at the Ephesians Church of God in Berkeley, California.
