On 27 March 2011 a suspected burglar was rescued after becoming trapped in a 30ft (9m) well at St Thomas' Church in Claremount Road, Boothtown. The man raised the alarm on his mobile phone, but police had earlier been called to a house in nearby Bell Street to reports of a burglary and when rescued the suspect was immediately arrested.
