Bowen Park was named after Queensland Governor, George Bowen.

Bowen Park was originally a parcel of land of about 16 hectares (40 acres) bordered by O'Connell Terrace, Bowen Bridge Road, Gregory Terrace and Brookes Street. The land was granted to the Queensland Acclimatisation SocietyQueensland Acclimatisation Society
