Boyd County Middle School opened in 1976. Construction on the school began in 1975. The name choice for the school mascot was either the "Patriots" or the "Rebels." The students chose the Rebels, they have now changed their mascot to the Wildcats.
The school originally opened as Summit Junior High, with grades 7 , 8 , and 9. There was also Catlettsburg Junior High, where the Catlettsburg Elementary School is now. Catlettsburg was a separate independent school system until 1974 or 1975. They merged with Boyd County in 1993.
