, Gladstone High School in Hazelwood and South Hills High School and merged the students in the then-state-of-the-art building with 5000 or more students attending. The school open with protesters from Brookline and Beechview communities, as well as the Hill and Hazelwood, the school had mass media coverage, and School Security and local Police were on hand the first week of school in 1976, this was a new direction for the Board of Education. The school colors are black and gold, and the original school mascot were Bullets, depicted by two large bullets with mean faces and fists clenched. They were replaced in the mid 1990s with a new mascot the Bull in response to parental complaints that the Bullets mascot could incite violence in students.
From 1979-’88, Brashear won seven City League titles, all outright. Brashear is the only City League “AAAA” rep to play in a PIAA semi-final, falling in 1988 to Pittsburgh Central Catholic, 19-14. Brashear has never tied for a City League title.

Academic achievement
In 2009, US News and World report ranked 21,000 public high schools, in the United States, based on three factors. First, the schools were analyzed for the number of students who achieved above the state average on the reading and math tests in 2008. Then they considered how the economically disadvantaged students performed against the state average. Finally, they considered the participation rate and the performance of students in college readiness by examining Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate test data. Seventy Pennsylvania high schools achieved ranking bronze, silver or gold rating. Fifty three Pennsylvania high schools achieved bronze. Brashear High School achieved Silver ranking. Athletics
The Brashear's sports history consists of a long line of dominant football teams since the opening of the school. Brashear is one of the most successful City League teams to date and has been the home to many successful athletes like Major Harris. Legendary coach Ron Wabby was the head coach since the opening season until the 2007 season where he finished his legacy with an undefeated season and capturing the City League title. Wabby set the standard of hard hitting defense and a successful offensive rushing attack for western Pennsylvania football.From 1979-’88, Brashear won seven City League titles, all outright.
