Brian Royal is a former Australian rules football
er, who played for the Western Bulldogs
(Footscray Football Club) and is currently an assistant coach for the Melbourne Football Club
.
Affectionately known as 'Choco', Royal was a champion rover from Bairnsdale who was recruited to the Footscray Football Club prior to the 1983 season. In his first year for the Bulldogs, he won the Charles Sutton Medal
, the Club's Best and Fairest award and went on to have a distinguished career. Royal represented his state on numerous occasions and was an All-Australian representative.
He spent all of his 199 matches with Footscray
. A favorite son, Royal was a prolific ball winner, exceptional mark for his size and an uncanny goal sneak. An achilles
injury sustained in the 1993 season denied him the opportunity to reach the 200 game milestone, and left him on 299 career goals. Post-retirement, Royal had the honour of being named as the Rover in the Bulldog Team of the Century.
Since his retirement, he has been an assistant coach at Melbourne

In December 2009, Royal joined the St Kilda Football Club as a Development Coach. After just one season at St Kilda, Royal returned to as an assistant coach in November 2010.
