Brickfilms LLC
Encyclopedia
Brickfilms.com is a website for "brickfilmers" to display their brickfilms and discuss brickfilming in general. It is owned by Cynthia Price and is mainly operated by members of the community. Starting as a simple site for the founder, Jason Rowoldt, to display several of his films, it quickly grew into a huge community with over a thousand films from directors all over the world.
The site is organized into many different sections, and users can freely navigate between them. "The Directory" showcases most brickfilms submitted. Whether a brickfilm is accepted into the directory is decided by a member of the Review Panel, a group of reviewers who accept or reject films submitted into the directory. The Directory is currently one of the only places to watch high-quality brickfilms, where online video sharing websites such as Youtube
tend to host low quality films.
In late 2002 or early 2003 the site was bought from Jason Rowoldt by Joshua Leasure. Shortly after, the site went into a major redesign and stayed with the design for around 5 years until a new design was released in early 2009. In late 2007, the site was purchased by Charles Price. The purchase went unnoticed until early 2008 when administrator Cynthia Price posted under the alias "thickasabrick" that Brickfilms.com was now owned by a network of educational websites, the respect of the website from the members point of view took a blow when Jonathan Schlaepfer (at this point a site administrator) created a rival site hosted on Brickfilms' Dedicated Server. When his administrator privileges were removed he created a huge controversy over Brickfilms.com and set up his rival site (at the time "ilovebrickfilming.com") in which many of the members from Brickfilms.com migrated over to.
Brickfilms.com also has a discussion forum, which is used by members needing assistance, new brickfilmers asking for constructive criticism, or people who just want to watch and discuss brickfilms. There's also a Resources section with plenty of information about hardware and software related to animation. The site hosts contests yearly (sometimes more than that) with member-run contests in between.
Some other features include a Tutorial Section and Store
in which DVDs and T-Shirts are sold.
